A Selection Of WashPIRG’s Top Accomplishments: Winning Concrete Results

Protecting Consumer Credit
WashPIRG helped pass legislation to allow consumers to freeze their own credit ratings when they are victimized by identity theft. This prevents thieves from obtaining credit under your name while also preventing further harm to your credit rating.

Homebuyers Bill Of Rights
WashPIRG is working to protect homebuyers from fraudulent and incompetent homebuilders and contractors. This includes legislation to increase warranty protections against poor workmanship and to prevent builders from forcing buyers to sign away basic legal protections.

Safe Toys
WashPIRG issues annual reports and works with the Consumer Protection Safety Commission to improve toy safety and remove dangerous toys made from toxic substances, that provide choking hazards, or can cause damage to internal organs or death when accidentally swallowed.

Safe And Affordable Prescription Drugs
WashPIRG works at the state and federal level to reform drug safety and marketing laws, develop bulk buying programs that save consumers money, and ensure that the government has the ability to negotiate reduced costs for Medicare recipients.

Protecting Consumers From Dangerous Mercury
Washington took another step toward preventing exposure to mercury when WashPIRG, working with the Washington Toxics Coalition and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, won passage of a new law in 2003, banning the sale of certain consumer products that contain mercury.

Finding Transportation Solutions
Thanks to Environment Washington’s advocacy, in 2005 legislators approved a transportation budget that preserves existing bridges and highways, and includes funding for mass transit, bike lanes, sidewalks and commute trip reduction incentives.
